Xerox Promises Color For The Same Cost as Black and White

By admin | September 24, 2007

Xerox announced today that it is launching a new line of Solid ink printers called the Xerox Phaser 8860 and 8860MFP, Multi-function printer that can print, copy, scan, and fax.  This announcement is unique because of the ink pricing strategy for these printers.  Xerox claims that a standard page with 5% coverage will have a cost of 1.7 cents per print regardless of whether it is printed in black and white or color.  Xerox has lowered their new pricing for the 8860 solid ink to a retail price of $71.99 for 6 ink sticks of color (Cyan, Magenta, & Yellow) The black ink is priced at $215.99 for a box of 6 sticks.

This is the first time any printer manufacturer has priced their color inks far below the cost of their black inks.  Their goal is to offer the business customer a color printing solution that is economical to use.  The impact to the compatible ink market for the printers was not discussed in the announcement, however I am sure the compatible manufactures like Media Sciences International will be looking closely at the new ink pricing structure.

Xerox indicated that the current line of Phaser 8560 printers would remain in the line up and offer a value pricing hardware alternative to the 8860.  The new Phaser 8860 color printer is priced at $2499 which is about $1000 more than a similarly configured Phaser 8560.   It will be interesting to watch the markets acceptance of the new hardware and ink pricing structure.  Typically US consumers focus on the up front acquisition expense and not on the total expense overtime.  Asian markets on the other hand, have always been able to price the hardware cost higher and supplies cost lower.

The new 8860MFP priced at $3,999 is not scheduled to ship until Mid November.  One interesting  note is that this unit, priced a $1000+ above the 8560MFP does not ship with the duplex option standard. It does offer a Lan Fax feature that is not included with the 8560MFP.

Xerox also announced a new Laser based MFP called the Phaser 6180 that is priced below $1000, and two new higher end WorkCentre Color printers designed for offices that do mostly black and white printing with an occasional need for color.

Will these new printers be available in the free printer program from FreePrinters.com? (http://www.FreePrinters.com)  Wait and see.
